You know what you WANT to say, but you don’t have the first clue where to start to create your postcard.

What you need is a Stash Pile!

It’s simple.  A Stash Pile is just a folder or drawer of ideas and postcard mailings you already get in the mail – even from your competition – that make you stop and look and read.  Everyone agrees that successful direct mail campaigns rely upon impact.  You want impact.  And your Stash Pile is literally dripping with it.  It is the best free impact-packed research tool you have!

What’s even better, it means you don’t have to start from scratch when designing your own postcard!

Here are 4 Ways to use your Stash Pile & Avoid Recreating the Direct Mail Wheel:

1.) No matter where you live, you’re receiving some kind of advertising every day. It’s in your mailbox, tucked into your newspaper (remember those?), or on your pizza box.  Keep everything you receive.

2.) Catalog your riches and see what strikes your fancy. There are going to be some things that turn you off from the postcard or flyer.  Make note of what you DON’T like because those are the elements to avoid when crafting your own postcard.

3.) Take note of what you DO like. Remember that old tune that told you to ‘accentuate the positive’?  Well, one or maybe more of these elements are going to be the base of your postcard.  Is it the phrasing?  Is it the color?  Is there an offer?  Is it the font or the pictures or the size or something you can’t put your finger on?  All of it matters.

4.) Get a little creative, get a little playful, and get a little perspective. Then get a little constructive criticism.  Grabbing a bunch of stuff from your Stash Pile is the start, but not the ending.  Put a couple of samples together.  Cut and paste some ideas.  Ask someone to look at what you’ve done.

Impact is what makes you NOT throw out a postcard.  Impact is what makes you stand at your mailbox or sit at your desk and read about the offer.  Impact is what pulls you into that thing in your hands, and might just be what makes you click into a website or pick up the phone.

[Sidebar: At this point, I want to make sure you understand that it is never okay to rip somebody off or to steal their work.  The word I’m looking for here is: plagiarism.  Nobody likes that.  And although imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the reputational risk to you or your business isn’t worth it.]
